Kenyan Government approves orphanage

New land

Good news - we have now been given 4 acres of land by Kitui town council and are working with a surveyor to register the land so we can obtain the legal title deed and start building. Our initial plan is to raise funds to build a ground floor accommodation block with bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, dining room and activity / study areas. Separately we plan to build a preschool consisting of 2 classrooms and toilet block, and sharing the kitchen with the orphanage.

new land for orphanage

Following a change in Kenyan Government requirements, a Social Worker is now resident full time at the orphanage. This now brings the permanent staff to 8.

We are currently working on a CD of the Mama Upendo Children's Choir, this will feature the children singing Gospel and praise songs. After the success of our group trip in 2006, in July 2010 we ran a trip for a group of Somerset students encompassing all aspects of Kenyan life and not just the bits that the tour operators would normally show. This has proven to be so popular that we are organising our 3rd trip in June 2011, and plan more regular trips in the future.

Kenyan Government approves orphanage

The orphanage got a visit from government officials who were so pleased that they are giving them official charity status in Kenya. This means that in the future they have a responsibility to make sure the Trust is provided for.
